Christmas Work Do

Friday 29th December 2006 11:32:12 PM

Yesterday I went to the Christmas work do that a friend had organised for our team. Usually I don't participate in work outing's mainly because it's an excuse for the drinker's to have a piss up and get mashed out of their faces, and secondly because I only work weekends and don't see half the team when I'm there.

I decided to go along with this one, a few reasons behind it. One - the guy who organised it is a really good friend of mine, two - the do was at a posh indian restaurant (who can say no to food?), and 3 - I didn't want to seem like a scrooge who never goes to any one of their outings.

I picked up my mate Shab and went to Leeds where I waited for the rest of the crew, we realised that all the drivers where non-drinkers meaning the remainder of the crew was ready for an alcohol fuelled head-throbbing night (and so right we were). From there we went to Brotherton (a further 10 miles) and arrived at the posh indian restaurant called Thaal (crap name I know, sounds like dhaal - ha) which was in the middle of nowhere.

Even before looking at the menu or taking a seat, they started getting the drinks in. Not one, not two, but a minimum of three. So the five of us decided to get a few J20's down us, not a good idea before a meal but we had to kill some time. Over half an hour later we (all 14 of us) decided to order from the menu.

The food was absolutely great (finally someone who can compete with Mumtaz in Bradford), everyone was absolutely stuffing themselves and having a good laugh too. Towards the end of the meal, and over half a dozen pints later (each, for the drinkers) things started to get really bizarre. The conversion changed from food, music, movies, and football to nothing but sex (who had a fling with who, who's eyeing who, who wants some, who has "potential", who's checking who, etc) and to make it worse they started talking about the senior people in the firm and who should be girl/guy of the department.

I have to admit the kind of shit they were coming out with was absolutely hilarious, I think it had something to do with the sound effects! To be honest this ain't my kinda thing and I don't feel 100% confident about going to these kind of team outings. It's all about "team bonding" apparently, one thing for sure is you get to know some office politics that you would never otherwise and afterwards you'll see people in a totally different light.

I feel for the other guys who gave a lift home to the piss-up crew, 'cos they wreaked of it. Luckily I didn't have to as I don't live in Leeds, heh heh. Despite the fun and all the gossip I don't think I'll be going out with the team anytime soon (unless it's my crew ofcourse).

The day you will master office politics, would be the day you will be able to conquer any place in that company. It never seems to amaze me, how socializing can take to to the top of the ladder :)

It's amazing how much crap people come out with when they're drunk. Same reason I don't go to office parties.

Spending an evening with a bunch of people pissed out of their heads and talking about sex isn't really my idea of fun.
