Waking up for Iftari

Monday 2nd October 2006 12:07:26 AM

I’m asleep in my room and mum opens the door and is trying to wake me up.

“C’mon Toseef, wake up it’s time for roza. Everyone else is awake why are still sleeping for?” (in punjabi) She carries on “This is no time to sleep, get up, get up and look at you – you’ve still got your socks on, c’mon wash your face and get downstairs. Food’s ready aswell.” (All of this sounds better in Punjabi, and you know how Asian women talk without taking a breather).

(Me groaningly) “Aw Ammi ji, why you waking me up for? I wanna sleep, can’t I skip it just for today? I don’t wanna get up … I’m tired” and with that I start snoozing as I know she’s gone to her room.

A few minutes later as I’m snoozing I’m thinking “Wow that was easy today, usually she rigs me a bit more, maybe she can’t be bothered waking me up anymore” so I snooze a bit more. Then I remember she mentioned something about me having my socks on while sleeping, hmmm unusual, I think to myself as I look at my socks.

Wait a minute, what time is it? I quickly grab my phone – 8 pm. What?! It takes a few seconds for it to sink in what has actually happened here. I’d gone to sleep at 6pm (got tired of waiting for Iftari) and slept right through it, for exactly two hours! And there was me thinking mum was trying to wake me up for Sehri.

I freshen up and troddle off downstairs, let off a bit of steam to the family for not waking me up (because the food has gone cold). After scoffing some biryani, I give Rio a bell and we grab some takeout. The end, and I feel like a prick for nodding off.

Is it just in my town of Bolton where everyone tends to eat fried food for the whole month ie samosas, kebabs. im getting quite sick of it and my mom says its the fried food that makes iftari that extra special!! Just yesterday after slaving 2 hours in the kitchen making tortila wraps something different for a change my dad and brothers walked in after namaz and as soon as they saw what was on menu there faces dropped prats!! i wish my brothers slept through iftari!!

Hey y'all thanks for popping over.

Shabs, Mocha, and Tara - I did micro it, but you all know its not the same thats why I went out.

Fairydust, a talking alarm clock? It wouldn't last a day in my room (probably end up smashed after I've flung it at the wall) heh.

Kamilah, niiice! I hope you told her the truth and not let her figure it out for herself.

Fees, you know what I think that was the day I got the lecture. Then again it is always "in a bit" when it comes to waking me up ...

OEPOF, I would say rozay is all about the fried stuff and I wouldn't want it any other way. Like yesterday I told my mates we'd go for a pizza later on but in Iftari I totally packed myself out (cos the food is so good) and only somehow managed a great big 1 slice of pizza.
I do feel for you though ... it's enough having roza then having to make the make the food - thats jus something else. If it was me I'd probably end up drooling over the food and no-one would eat it, urgh disgusting.

Chow and keep it rockin people!
