A while back my 12 month o2 mobile phone contract expired so I rang to cancel (because I already had an existing one). You get put through to the disconnections department who are now known as “retentions” who try their best to keep you with o2 by offering better deals than your existing contract.
The best deal the representative could come up with was 500 anytime minutes and 250 texts for £20 per month. I wasn’t interested mainly because I didn’t want to be paying extra (on top of my existing one) and this was an average deal which I could pick up anytime from the shops.
I decline the offer and get back to requesting a cancellation, only to be told I would have to put it in writing. Its worse enough they ask you to call on a specific date to cancel (exactly 1 month before the contract expires). Probably throwing in extra hurdles so you don’t bother.
I write in and a week later I get a call from an o2 representative “about the letter you’ve sent in”. It turns out to be a lengthy conversation and she is offering £100 credit towards the account which means the first 5 months would be free (or another way to look at it is ((20 x 12) – 100) / 12 = £11.67 per month). Pretty good I say.
I rig her a bit more on the minutes telling her my T-Mobile contract has much more, “is it ok if I put you on hold so I can get this authorized by a manager?” and she returns a few minutes later saying she can offer 750 minutes with 250 texts. An offer I couldn’t refuse.
I don’t know who got sold here, me or her. Either way I got a fantastic deal (eventhough I didn’t need one) so I will probably pass the sim onto Aapa or Mum whose contracts I know are expiring.
My advice would be to get a 12 month contract instead of the 18 month ones (which I made the unfortunate mistake with T-Mobile). This way you can push them sooner to offer you a better deal.
ahhh i am stuck with T-mobile too.
oh no, i was recently thinking of changing from o2 to orange, and was hoping it would be a quick fix. I can't stand o2, they have given me sooo much hassle in the past!
