Bombers put Dewsbury on the map

Thursday 21st July 2005 02:13:00 AM

Before the London bombings shocked the UK and the rest of the world, hardly anyone knew or heard of Dewsbury. Most of the time when people (outside Dewsbury) asked where I was from and upon hearing my response would immediately say 'where's that then?' and to that I would reply 'it's near Leeds'. Everyone knows where Leeds is, so its a familiar place to mention (mainly because of the football team and the city life).

Now if I mention my hometown everyone thinks thats where the bombers were from! And if I follow that up with a mention Leeds, they're going to think there's something wrong with this guy. We're recieving a lot of bad press at the moment.

We're just as shocked as everyone else that the bombers originated from Dewsbury and Leeds.

from the guardian

(Mohammed Sidique) Khan's mother-in-law, Farida Patel, also dedicated herself to education. Last year she was a guest at a Buckingham Palace garden party, where she received an award for her work as a teacher specialising in bilingual studies

Everyone in Dewsbury (especially in Savile Town) knows Farida Patel, and I feel truly sorry for her. All these years she works to make herself a respectable figure and her bomber son-in-law shatters all her efforts.

On Friday when I went for prayer, there were police and reporters all around the Zakiria Mosque. The reporters were taking loads of pictures of everyone entering and leaving the building, what is happening in Dewsbury?

must be weird in the space of a few weeks over in dewsbury

first that "hanging" incident and now this, for a place that is normally very quiet (ie, nearly everday is routine), this must be weird.

i wonder how the people are handling it, theres already too much activity, the best thing would be a quick return to normalcy.

i can't help but notice a hell lot more police cars/vans are whizzing arroud the place often with lights and sirens blaring, maybe its been like that, and ive never notice. but given these times it just unnveres you a bit everytime

i think i am correct in saying that dewsbury has probably never gotten this much attention, probably more so when back in the yorkshire ripper days.

just hope everything can return back to normal and the good people of dewsbury can get along with their lives.

Yes solid-box you are correct, there are loads of cop cars whizzing around, and we havnt had this much press since the yorkshire ripper (although I dont remember much).

Also a friend told me that three of the bombers regularly went to the same gym as us (CJ's) and police were questioning the owner, OMG!

Everyone is doing thier best to move on and put this all behind us ...

(just wondering are you from dewsbury? - drop me an email if you dont want to mention it here)

Dude, that's not a nice feeling, I hope things settle down soon, in Dewsbury and elsewhere.

We had our own spot of infamy with David Copeland, another sick twisted individual, who lived across the road from a mate of mine. Glad he's locked up 'cos he'd be a complete nightmare if he were out today...

Peace.
