Blogger Search Engine Friendly URL's
Tuesday 25th January 2005 05:03:00 AM
You got to love these new Blogger search engine friendly neat extension-less scrumptious url's that I've managed to come up with.
The average user won't give a damn about url's (and I don't blame 'em) but if you're a web geek like me, it makes you go all fuzzy inside.
If you hang about webmaster forums long enough you'll realise that clean extension-less url's are the way forward, as they:
- Look better
- Are easier to remember
- Help in search engine ranking
- Make changing scripting language that little bit easier
As Google had already crawled 32 of my pages, I wanted the old url's to redirect to the new ones; otherwise it thinks of the pages as a duplicate.
It took me some time to achieve my goal, in fact it took me most of 2 days seeking for help and finding useful resources.
I started some threads asking for help in some webmaster forums that I regularly browse (and sometimes participate), namely:
but surprisingly found no answer. I was literally banging my head against the monitor wanting to find a solution; in an act of desperation I offered
£10 to solve my htaccess problem - but still no help was given and I ended up keeping the tenner in my pocket :-)
There was only one thing to do - do it myself!
If someone had helped me out on the forums I would have made my solution publicly available. Maybe they were all thinking 'it's just another newbie' because of my low post count.
Some of you may be thinking I'm the stingiest guy around for not releasing any code, but right now I don't care.
I'm no programmer, so if I can mash some code together anyone can. It's not hard to find the solution; just think logically. As I said before it took me two days to figure it out!
I'm feeling slightly glum about this.
Praise to Blogger, one of the best content managing systems around, and it's free!

Why not make a great article or two out of it...?
Would benefit all and get your name out there in a positive manner.
Plus I would get to see the solution of course ;)
