Who could have thought Amir Khan, a young Asian 17 year old who was unheard of three weeks ago, would do the UK justice by winning a silver medal in the lightweight 57-60kg division.
He lost to the defending champion Mario Cesar Kindelan Mesa of Cuba 30-22 who is retiring at the age of 33 after winning the gold medal. Kindelan had the advantage of experience as he has been boxing for more years than Khan has been alive.
Kindelan is unbeaten since 1999 and he also beat Amir Khan three months before in a pre-Olympic tournament.
It seems hard to believe that a 17 year old (and also who is Asian) has made it this far in the Olympics for Britain. The incredible aspect of it is that everyone in the UK has been supporting him like mad, from the old Asian man to the young British boy.
Amir Khan deserves all the success he receives, no doubt about it, as he has been training since the tender age of eleven.
One funny thing Amir said at the end of the match was that he would like to pass his driving test as his next target, something I have also yet to accomplish.
Well done Amir, hope you get gold next time!
